U-M’s Ashley Lau Also Gets Invitation to Augusta National Women's Amateur

By Tom Lang

The University of Michigan announced that women’s golf senior Ashley Lau is a late add to the list of competitors to the 2022 Augusta National Women's Amateur, March 30-April 2, at the Island and Bluff nines at Champions Retreat Golf Club in Augusta, Ga.

She joins U-M teammate Hailey Borja, who received her invitation in mid-January.

(See pages 24-25 of the https://www.migolfjournal.com/february-2022 edition of the magazine for details on Borja and MSU golfer Valery Plata playing in the ANWA as well.)

No information was revealed about why the opening for Lau to accept came up.

The international field will compete in a 54-hole stroke-play event. Starting with 36 holes at the Island and Bluff nines at Champions Retreat Golf Club, on Wednesday and Thursday, March 30-31, the field will be cut down to the top 30, who will advance to Augusta National for the final round that Saturday played on national television. The day prior the entire field will play an official practice round at Augusta on Friday, April 1.

A 2021 Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-America honorable mention selection and All-Big Ten first teamer, Lau has had a stellar senior season, currently on pace to set Michigan’s program record with her 71.81 scoring average. In seven events this school year, she has four top-five finishes, including two individual titles and a runner-up finish.

As a freshman, she earned the program's fourth individual invitation to the NCAA Regional competition. After COVID-19 canceled all 2020 postseason events, she helped guide U-M to a tie for fifth at the Columbus Regional, advancing the Wolverines to their fourth NCAA Finals appearance. Starting all 34 of her career events, she has 17 top-20 individual finishes and has carried a 73.39 career scoring average.
